Team Débuts


Individual competitors came from Baldwin Wallace College, OH, St. Martin's College, Lacey, WA, Oxford University of England and Duquesne in Pittsburgh.

Illinois is coached by Wayne Angel.

Portland State University is coached by New York native Kebba Tolbert.

Nevada Las-Vegas assistant coach Garfield Ellenwood ran on the famous Rochester East team in the 1990s.

Texas A&M's new coach is Pat Henry, the former head coach of LSU. A&M had a winner in its first meet, Fabrice LaPierre who had a lifetime best in the long jump 25-9.25.

Georgia State is coached by Eric Campbell.

Penn State women ‘s team coached by Beth Alford-Sullivan.

The Globe Institute of Technology in Lower Manhattan is coached by Terri Dendy.


University of British Columbia in Vancouver B.C., Canada, is coached by Marek Jedrzejek. UBC ran the men's distance medley and women's mile was run by Shannon Elmer, left, daughter of legendary Canadian distance runner and coach Ken Elmer, who was also present.

Texas San Antonio was accompanied by assistant coach Canadian Olympian Rose Monday. “I want to come back and bring 15 kids next year,” she said.

University of Pittsburgh is coached by Alonzo Webb. Pitt won the men's Championship DMR in 9:44.45 over Arkansas (9:45.18).


Matt Centrowitz' American University had its first ever win in the Armory Collegiate meet in Keira Carlstrom in the 3,000. Matt's daughter Lauren, (left) ran a 4:46 mile, a lifetime best, and finished 9 th overall for Stanford University. Asked if he was looking forward to watching is daughter run the mile race, Coach Centrowitz grimaced and said, “I won't be able to watch.” Matt, of course, ran at the Armory more than 30 years ago when he was a star miler for Power Memorial Academy in Manhattan.

And this is Walt Murphy's first Collegiate Invitational meet at the Armory. Walter is usually working for television at th
e Tyson Invitational but because of this year's date change, there was no conflict for either Walter, or the team from Arkansas.
