August 19
Once we heard about the change in plans for the shot put, Olympia became a must for us. So the question wasn’t
motivation; it was logistics. This would require all of our powers to accomplish. An appeal to the appropriate gods
wouldn’t hurt either, so we dashed off emails to Zeus, for whom a temple had been built by the great architect
Elean in Olympia in the 5th Century BC, and to the goddess Hera, in whose name the Games known as the Heraia
were also held in Olympia, for girls, for centuries. (Unlike the men, the women did not compete naked but wore a
short dress called the chiton). Would the men compete naked in Olympia in 2004 AD, or women in chitons?
